In the land of cooking there are so many different ways to enjoy the kitchen. I recently made something at home that was so much better than delivery – pizza! I know you’re probably saying “I’m not about it sit and try to make dough!” But for this version, you don’t have it! I am always in search of a great pie and have been disappointed on many occasions, but this time…nothing but excitement!
With this pizza you can buy pre-made dough from the grocery store and freeze it for whenever you’re ready to use it. Just be sure to have flour in the house because you’ll need it when you’re ready to make this beauty. Keeps it from sticking to you, your lab, and everything else! The rest is up to you. Making pizza at home allows you to tailor it to your taste buds and not settle for whatever topping options are on the menu. Most pizzas will come with mozzarella cheese. What if I want Fontina? Parmesan? Cheddar? Use whichever you like. Use marinara for sauce…or barbecue…or clam sauce. As for toppings – sky’s the limit! Veggies, any type of protein, tofu… You can even make breakfast pizzas with eggs!
I decided to do a pizza with a whole wheat dough for my crust. I cooked off some Italian sausage, caramelized some red onions, and sautéed some mushrooms. I normally make my own sauce, but for this I used Hunt’s Roasted Garlic & Onion Pasta Sauce. For my cheese I grated Monterey Jack right before I was ready to put it atop my pie.
When I assembled it, I brushed the outer crust with olive oil and put the dough in the oven for about 5-10 minutes first on a pizza pan/stone. Then I spread a layer of sauce (whatever amount you like just don’t let it drown 😉). I sprinkled on half my grated cheese, put on my toppings, sprinkled the other half of grated cheese, and placed it in the oven to bake! Once it was cooked to my liking, I put it under the broiler a little bit to get that golden color! Voila!
